-Is there a cause you know of in our world today that you feel is of
similar/equal importance? Something worthy of groups taking action, even
to the point of non-violent demonstration or protest?
- Can you equate any issue in our world today that causes similar
passion, and deeply set stances/sides as the race issue in the South
during the Civil Rights movement? Where do your yourself stand on the
issue and how does it affect your life?
- If Hollywood attempted to depict the Freedom Riders in movie form,
could it be done authentically with a close rendering of real events to
the point where it was more effective for audiences than the
documentary, or will the documentary always trump anything Hollywood
could do, given that it's the "true" story?
-I do not know many causes with the same importance as race-riots during the 60s. That was a big problem in the United States and I do not think anything has reached the same scale today. However, one big protest in our world today was the occupy wall street and similar protests. Our economy is really struggling and I think more people are going to be speaking out against it.
-An issue I feel is important today is the issue of gay rights. While I think the hysteria of it has gone down incredibly in the past years, people are constantly fighting for and against it. Gays have been targeted for being different just as the blacks. They have gays and non gays on their side similarly to the freedom riders, who were a group of black and white. Some groups have taken action to protest for the right for same sex marriage. However, there are some going against it as well. Same sex marriage does not affect my life very much, but I am for the right for gays to marry. I don't think the government has the right to say who can or can not get married. That is a religious issue and religion and state should stay separated.
-I think the documentary will always be the best source of information about the freedom riders. They are always the best forms of information when depicting true events because they include real clips, and interview people who were really part of the event. I do though think that Hollywood movie would get more attention from younger audiences and more people would watch the movie. Hollywood would probably come close enough to creating a close rendering of the real event and bring it to more people.

Blog post #2
How should adults in 2012 "parent" thier children? Lend your opinion on
how this should be done. Think about the approach your parents/guardians
have taken in raising you. Consider the parenting you've seen of others
in your peer group (how your extended family parents your cousins, or
how your friends parents deal with your friends), and finally, think
about the parent you might want to be someday. How would you go about
raising your children? What standards would you hold them to (if
any), what rules would you impose (if any)?
Parenting is a hard job. There are many different teaching styles and some work better then others depending on the family. There is no right or wrong way to parent your children. In my opinion, its important to make sure there is a certain level of respect between parent and child. Kids need to realize their parents are authority figures. However, that goes both ways. Children deserve the same. While respect is essential, so is trust and friendship in a family. Having a good, comfortable relationship with your parents can pay off. I can say from experience, that I have a very close bond with my mom. I can go to her about everything and I rarely have to lie to her. We have a lot of respect for each other and she trusts me to be responsible and make my own mistakes. From being with my friends, I have observed the differences between them and my family. A lot of my friends have strict parents and that works for them, but personally, I wouldn't be as obedient and mature as I am if my parents were the same. Overall, I am arguing that the way you treat your children is a personal decision and each child needs to be handled differently.
Being a parent is not something I think about very often. Its something that you learn with age. However, if I had children, it wold be important to me to have an appropriate level of respect and honesty. I think those are the two most critical elements to a good parent-child relashionship. I would allow them to make their own mistakes and learn from them just as my parents have done with me. My children would know that I always expect them to be the best they can me and follow my rules. A lot of the enforced rules would be similar to the ones my parents have made me follow. Also, I would teach them many of the values I have learned growing up. My parents would be a big influence on my parenting style because they taught me well and I want to follow their example.

Race-Relations
Q: How would you sum up race-relations in America today, and more specifically, what is your own personal experience with it? What do you see are some of the more important issues, ideas, controversies at the heart of race-relations in America today?
A: We have come along way since the 60s with race-relations in America. Back in the 60s, blacks were seen as inferior and were limited by Jim-crowe laws. As I saw in To Kill a Mockingbird, the public had a negative view of blacks. There was a lot of name calling and discrimination of them. You don't see that so much today. Being black is no more than a color and does not make a person any less important in our society. While there may be some older generations who still have those unfair views of African Americans, the younger generations are immune to color. Personally, I have a hard time reading about the racial separation during the 60s because it is not fair. Nobody should be attacked because of their skin color. I have been tought not to judge physical features such as skin, hair, eyes etc. and focus more on the personality and inside of a person. When looking at the race-relations in America today, there are still some problems. Older generations who grew up during the 1900s have passed down their racist views to their children and so on. There are still people who are racist because that is how they grew up. However, as time goes on, that becomes less of a problem. Also, some people have placed their racism for blacks and put it towards other groups instead. There are still some minority groups being targeted or discriminated against in America, but not even close to the extent of blacks during the 60s. Our country has grown and developed and learned from those mistakes. I can, without a doubt, say that racism is a very small problem in the United States today.
