-Is there a cause you know of in our world today that you feel is of
similar/equal importance? Something worthy of groups taking action, even
to the point of non-violent demonstration or protest?
- Can you equate any issue in our world today that causes similar
passion, and deeply set stances/sides as the race issue in the South
during the Civil Rights movement? Where do your yourself stand on the
issue and how does it affect your life?
- If Hollywood attempted to depict the Freedom Riders in movie form,
could it be done authentically with a close rendering of real events to
the point where it was more effective for audiences than the
documentary, or will the documentary always trump anything Hollywood
could do, given that it's the "true" story?
-I do not know many causes with the same importance as race-riots during the 60s. That was a big problem in the United States and I do not think anything has reached the same scale today. However, one big protest in our world today was the occupy wall street and similar protests. Our economy is really struggling and I think more people are going to be speaking out against it.
-An issue I feel is important today is the issue of gay rights. While I think the hysteria of it has gone down incredibly in the past years, people are constantly fighting for and against it. Gays have been targeted for being different just as the blacks. They have gays and non gays on their side similarly to the freedom riders, who were a group of black and white. Some groups have taken action to protest for the right for same sex marriage. However, there are some going against it as well. Same sex marriage does not affect my life very much, but I am for the right for gays to marry. I don't think the government has the right to say who can or can not get married. That is a religious issue and religion and state should stay separated.
-I think the documentary will always be the best source of information about the freedom riders. They are always the best forms of information when depicting true events because they include real clips, and interview people who were really part of the event. I do though think that Hollywood movie would get more attention from younger audiences and more people would watch the movie. Hollywood would probably come close enough to creating a close rendering of the real event and bring it to more people.
